About

Kit Eastman

St. Paul, Minnesota textile artist Kit Eastman explores the materials and techniques of the Japanese tradition of katazome, or paste resist stencil dyeing, using a palette of natural pigments and dyes on linen, silk and other natural fibers. Her work celebrates daily meetings with the wild creatures, plants, and lake breezes of her local urban surroundings.

The materials, processes and gestures of katazome inspire Kit almost as much as her subject matter! In sharing her work and how it was made, she hopes to inspire an appreciation of nature as well as curiosity about this inventive, robust, and earth-friendly Japanese textile tradition.
