Sharing Serizawa Katazome Calendar

July 20, 2009 Artists

Last week I found an excellent post featuring a katazome calendar designed by Keisuke Serizawa on a lovely blog called Dreamers Rise, written by Chris Kearin.  I made a brief comment on the post and then a day or so later, to my delight, my work was featured on Dreamers Rise along that of Moku [...]

Heart of a nest

July 8, 2009 Inspiration

I’m contemplating the ideas in a book rich with poetic imagery about houses — The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard, first published in France in 1958. The author started his career as a philosopher of science and ended it as a philosopher of the imagination! It’s a slow read, which is fine because I [...]

Inspiring Radiographs

June 18, 2009 Flora and fauna

I’ve been working on katazome for the upcoming Art at St. Kate’s show on July 25th. Meanwhile I want to share a few amazing images sent to me by my brother Joe, who is an anatomy professor and world-famous ichthyologist (I have always enjoyed bragging about my siblings). He and my sister-in-law captured these images [...]

June 6, D-day, B-day

June 5, 2009 Inspiration

My mother’s brother Joseph William Thornton enlisted in the 82nd Airborne, 505th PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment) when he was 19 years old. He jumped into Normandy on June 6th 1944 and was killed in action either on June 6th, as the Honor Roll (first link above) states, or on June 16th, the date given on [...]

Considering a New Dye Brush

May 24, 2009 Artists

I need to purchase another jizomebake brush, used to brush dyes (or soy sizing) on larger areas of the cloth. I own one, but it would be helpful to have a somewhat smaller one to use only for colors. John Marshall is the only USA source for this as far as I can tell (see [...]

Gratitude, Bliss

May 20, 2009 Inspiration

I’ve been writing this post in my head for days. Art-a-Whirl weekend went well. I sold a few things, picked up a few more names on my email list via a give-away sign-up, and connected with new and old friends. The weekend was gorgeous, weather-wise — that week in these parts when crabapple trees, lilacs [...]

Clothing Memories

May 7, 2009 Artists

Today in between sewing pillows I went to see a show, entitled Communion, of Jon Coffelt’s clothing miniatures at Susan Hensel Gallery. (The links connect to the Fiberarts article on Jon and to Susan’s post about the show and the opening.) Seeing these hand-stitched miniatures, each with a story, stimulated my own memories of clothing. [...]

Happy May!

May 4, 2009 Inspiration

Yesterday the 35th annual May Day Parade and Festival was held in Minneapolis, a creation of the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater. This event inaugurates spring for many a Minnea-politan, and the day was glorious. After the parade, people enjoy a spring pageant in nearby Powderhorn Park. A few more photos from [...]

Potter, Landscape, Ham

April 21, 2009 Artists

It’s possible that today’s post will be the first in a regular feature. Due to the slow nature of my process, there isn’t something coming out of my studio daily, or even each several days, that is post-ready. So, today I’ll share some objects (and a person) I’m inspired by. Potter Christy Wert and I [...]

Studio Improvements, Tool-making, Fabric Stretching

March 23, 2009 Inspiration

Since my last post, I’ve been doing a lot of preparation work for dyeing fabric. I’ve lacquered stencils, which involves using water-based floor paint to attach silk “Sha” to the front of the stencil. John Marshall’s Website has complete instructions. We modified my studio a bit to allow me to stretch fabric in preparation for [...]
