Pasting rabbits

by Kit on June 2, 2010

I’ve postponed the indigo awhile again, as cooler weather has returned. Meanwhile, I got busy this week pasting my new rabbits-greens-moon stencil on 100% off-white linen from a local fabric outlet, S. R. Harris.  It’s funny how every mammal I depict reminds me of my well-fed cat, Lester (in body if not in ears). I have a tendency to make my paste too thick/dry, and have been making an effort to overcome this. This batch felt just right.

These will make lovely runners and hangings! I’m imagining the colors I might use…

I’ve finished the last bit of cutting and testing of my rabbit-moon-greens repeat. I’ve illustrated the last couple steps in the repeat testing process on my new Facebook page. Stop by for a visit! FB has been a real learning curve for me. My intention is to make the updates there shorter and sweeter. Some people prefer Facebook to blogs. It seems like the online world is forever shifting and adaptability is the key!

Here’s the final stencil. I’m pasting and dyeing other work this week, along with reinforcing the stencil. The rabbits will be ready to paste later in the week. This one will work as a single pictorial image i.e. for a hanging as well as a repeat. The size of the image is 12×16.”

I must admit I’ve been all in a muddle about this bunny. I’m about 80% there. Scribbling (a lot), cutting shapes and rearranging them helps!

An upcoming post will show a stencil in the process of being cut.

Light and dark: completed stencil

February 17, 2010 Katazome

I completed carving my new stencil today. I tinkered and tinkered with the design until I was satisfied with the shapes and curves. This is a repeating design along both horizontal and vertical axes, so I had the opportunity to work on registration skills following instructions on John Marshall’s new DVD, Journeys in Katazome: Stencils. [...]

Major doodle

February 10, 2010 Katazome

Continuing the minnows and mussels design from the previous post, I created a half-drop repeat from my favorite variation (item C). This means the 2 units on the right side are offset on the vertical dimension by 50%. I doodled with my black marker to define the positive and negative parts of the basic unit. [...]

Stencil Re-design

November 22, 2009 Drawing

I received John Marshall’s wonderful new DVD, Journeys in Katazome, in the mail last week. It’s the first in a series of DVDs teaching the katazome process, starting with stencil design, cutting and preparation. A richly illustrated interactive PDF document describes the process in detail from start to finish. The DVD also includes high-quality demonstration [...]

Pasting a pattern on washi; stencil surgery

August 25, 2009 Katazome

Yesterday I had more than enough rice paste resist so decided to paste my new Meadow Rue pattern on two large pieces of 70% kozo (washi) Moriki paper from Wet Paint Art. I have wanted to make folded paper blinds for a room in our house, and this paper is the perfect size. The pasting [...]

More layers, a non-traditional approach

August 21, 2009 Katazome

I am using katazome tools and materials in a non-traditional way with this piece. I have added paste and and dye layers, approaching it a bit like a painting but more backward and indirect. It will get 3 or possibly 4 more layers before I set it aside. In the beginning I drew out the [...]

Variations on a theme

August 14, 2009 Katazome

I’ve been working on several wall hangings simultaneously this week. Two make use of stencils I’ve used for pillow designs. I feel they will work better on the wall. I’ve added imagery below each bird portrait to lengthen the format, using stencils representing singular elements — water, grass, trees. Below they’ve been pasted. I under-dyed [...]

Awakening the furniture, carving a stencil

August 8, 2009 Katazome

This week I painted a little table that belonged to my grandmother. It had been serving as a neglected yet useful platform for the dog food container in the basement, until it dawned on me that it would be a sweet object on which to photograph my katazome runners (I’m s l o w l [...]
